ACU Third At GSAC, Trio Tabbed All-Conference

Sun City West, Ariz. - The Firestorm men put on quite the show at Briarwood Country Club, as they finished third in the 2024 GSAC Men's Golf Tournament. Arizona Christian broke their season-best 18-hole team score (287) two times over in the conference championship with a first round 283 and a blistering final round 278 (-10).

Despite ACU's brilliance, #3 OUAZ outshone everyone with an 18-stroke victory over a surging The Master's, who settled a 36-hole tie with ACU by three. The OUAZ Spirit also claimed stake to the individual title, as Kolby Shackelford (-11) outlasted teammate Colby Watkins in a three-hole sudden death playoff.

Three Firestorm golfers (Gaige Pilot, Max Mylett, Matt Campbell) were added to the 2024 GSAC All-Conference Team following the event's conclusion. The distinction is new for Pilot and Campbell, but came as Mylett's second straight honor (2023 All-GSAC selection).

Pilot, a junior from Woodland, Washington, played his final 36 holes in 9-under-par to earn him fourth place and a spot on the All-Tournament Team (includes the top-five placers). His 54-hole total this week (207) was his season-low by eight strokes and his final-round 67 (-5) was a season-best. In eight events and 21 rounds, Pilot finished in the top-five three times (six top-10s) and posted an 18-hole scoring average of 73.33.

Mylett, a senior hailing from Laguna Beach, California, held a share of the tournament-lead after a first-round 69 (-3) and closed with a bogey-free 68 to grab solo sixth. His 209 total shattered his previous 54-hole score of 223 and his final-round 68 was a career-low. In five events and 13 rounds, Mylett notched two top-10s and recorded an 18-hole scoring average of 74.46.

Campbell, a junior who calls Alberta, Canada home, only trailed by one after 18 holes before falling out of contention with a second-round 76 (+4). He completed the week with the second-best scoring average on the par 3s (3.17) and led the tournament field in total pars (39), including eight consecutive to begin the championship. In eight events and 21 rounds, Campbell corralled three top-fives (four top-10s) and signed an 18-hole scoring average of 74.10.

Hector Nevarez and Nicholas Goldsberry each contributed to the Firestorm's 10 rounds at par or better. The senior Nevarez fired a 72 (E) out of the gates and sophomore Goldsberry shot 71 (-1) in the team's lights-out final round in which they combined for 18 birdies.

NEXT UP

The Firestorm will have to wait until the 2024 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship (May 21-24) tournament field is announced to see if their season continues. ACU will be dependent on an at-large bid, as only the conference tournament winner earns automatic entry. Top Firestorm golfers (Pilot, Campbell, Mylett) will each have a shot at individual qualification.
