ACU Beats BENU, Earns Second Seed In GSAC Tourney

Mesa, Ariz.- In their regular season finale, Arizona Christian outlasted Benedictine Mesa for the five set win.  Combined with OUAZ losing to the Master's, the tie breaks went in favor of the Firestorm and they will be the number two seed in next week's GSAC Championship tournament.

  • Set one opened to a close 5-3 score
  • But ACU exploded for a 13-1 run
  • The Firestorm crushed the first set with .571 hitting (15 kills, no errors)
  • The second set was anything but a blowout as the Firestorm were chasing most of the set
  • Down as many as six points on four occasions including 19-13 ACU fought back
  • ACU moved in front at 22-21 and later fended off four set points
  • Two set points for ACU resulted in a 29-29 tie
  • A block from Jacobs and another attack BENU attack error gave ACU the set at 31-29
  • Set three saw ACU up 17-10 but the Redhawks closed out the set 15-4
  • Van Wie opened set four with a kill but barring one mid set tie BENU led the rest of the way
  • Four straight attack errors by Benedictine (one block by Bethany Johnson/Jacobus) and a Johnson kill gave ACU a 5-0 cushion in the fifth
  • No ties were had in the set and the Firestorm earned the win
  • Thirteen wins in GSAC play extends the program record while 18 overall wins is one off tying ACU season record

On Tuesday, Arizona Christian will host OUAZ, who they just faced on Friday evening, in the GSAC Semifinals in the Firestorm Recreation Center.  First serve has been scheduled for 7:00 pm.
