Defense Of ACU Better Than Offense Of CU, Firestorm Advance to NAIA Quarterfinals

Glendale, Ariz.- Going head-to-head with the highest scoring offense left in the 87th Annual NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship, Arizona Christian, top 15 in scoring defense, held down Cumberlands (KY) on Thursday and advanced to the NAIA Quarterfinals.  A balanced offense for the Firestorm saw six (and nearly seven) finish with double digit scoring.

  • At first the game was close as the teams exchanged five ties and seven lead changes
  • Just over seven minutes in CU went ahead 19-18
  • However when Tucker Molina scored in the paint ACU went on a 9-0 run
  • The Firestorm never trailed again
  • Nicholas shot a perfect 5-5 (including 1-1 from three point country) in the first half for 11 points
  • In the second half, the Firestorm built as large as a 22 point edge 
  • The Pioneers rallied to cut the deficit to just seven  
  • But the Firestorm hit their free throws down the stretch (Silva was 5-6 at the line in the final minute)
  • ACU cashed in 22 points off turnovers
  • Bench scoring saw ACU hold a 38-26 edge
  • ACU advances to at least the quarterfinals for the third time in the last four years
  • The Firestorm extend their win streak to 15 games

Up Next
Arizona Christian will face Grace (IN) in a rematch of their Round of 16 game from last year when the Lancers ended the Firestorm season.  The teams will enjoy Friday off before they play on Saturday at 1:00 pm Central/ 11 :00 am Pacific.
