Firestorm Go 1-1 On Day One Of GSAC Championships

Prescott, Ariz.- Day one of the GSAC Championships saw Arizona Christian lose a lead late and come up short in game one.  In game two, they lost the lead in the sixth again but responded with a six run seventh to hold on and win a thriller.  Dayna Herrera was a pitching marvel as she threw two complete games.

  • Henry opened the scoring with a squeeze bunt 
  • Miles followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead
  • The Eagles hit back-to-back home runs to tie the score 
  • In the fourth, Martin bunted home Lauko for a 3-2 cushion
  • With two outs in the sixth, ERAU cashed in two RBI singles for a 5-3 edge
  • Herrera doubled behind Garcia's single but both were left in scoring position at game's end

  • Facing elimination for both teams, Hope International jump out to 4-0 first inning capped by a three run home run
  • Herrera put ACU on the board with a two RBI single in the third
  • Lauko was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 4-3
  • ACU grabbed a 6-4 edge with three unearned runs in the fourth
  • After HIU made it 6-5, Grubb singled home Martin for a 7-5 score
  • An RBI triple and two run single in the sixth put the Royals back in front 8-7
  • In the seventh, Lauko walked, Fogleman doubled, Martin singled, and Miles singled to score Lauko and start the six run rally
  • Garcia- RBI single, Herrera- RBI groundout, Grubb- 2 RBI single, and Bradford doubled home Grubb for a 13-8 cushion
  • HIU scored three for an 13-11 score and had the bases loaded before Herrera managed to retire the final two batters

Up Next
On Wednesday evening, Arizona Christian will face the loser of the Embry-Riddle (AZ) and Park-Gilbert game from the winner's bracket at 6:00 pm.  It will be another elimination game for both teams.
