Lumberjacks Top Firestorm In Road Match

Glendale, Ariz.- Arizona Christian fell 6-1 to Northern Arizona on Saturday afternoon, as the Lumberjacks swept doubles play and controlled the majority of singles competition.

  • Match Score: Arizona Christian - 1, NAU - 6
  • Records: Arizona Christian - 12-6, NAU - 15-5

Inside Box Score
  • NAU set the tone early by claiming the doubles point with wins on all three courts. 
  • The Firestorm's closest showing came at No. 3 doubles, where Samuel Miyata and Petar Wemmenhove battled but ultimately fell 7-5. 
  • NAU secured the point with decisive victories at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles.
  • In singles, ACU's lone highlight came from Hugo Abril at the No. 1 position. 
  • After dropping the first set 6-0, Abril responded with a strong comeback, taking the second set 7-5 before edging out a tightly contested third-set tiebreaker, 14-12, to earn ACU's only point of the match.
  • The Lumberjacks proved dominant across the remaining courts, picking up straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles. 
  • At No. 3, Wemmenhove forced a second-set tiebreak but came up just short in a 7-6 (7-4) decision.
  • ACU lost the match, 1-6.
 
Thoughts from Coach Phil Carlisle
"Another great experience for our guys to close out the regular season. We played three D1 teams this spring and really showed well in all three of them and I'm very proud of the guys for that. Now we turn our attention to the GSAC tournament this week, I know the guys are excited for the opportunities ahead!"

The Firestorm will compete in the GSAC Men's Tennis Conference Championship tournament April 16-18. More information will be announced at a later date.
