ACU Hands SBCC Their First Loss

Glendale, Ariz.– Arizona Christian used an explosive second-quarter run to erase an early deficit and power past an undefeated Santa Barbara City College team, 13-9, on Tuesday. Kellen Haigh led the Firestorm with a hat trick, while Carson Brown, Blake Smith, and Gavin Waddell each added two goals. Contributions came from across the lineup, with seven different players scoring for the Firestorm. ACU's decisive second-quarter performance proved to be the difference, as the Firestorm controlled the tempo the rest of the way to complete the comeback win.

Inside The Game
  • The Firestorm improved to 4-8 on the season, overcoming a fast start from SBCC, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. 
  • ACU began to chip away late in the first quarter, getting on the board with goals from Logan Malone and Kellen Haigh to cut the deficit to 4-2 heading into the second.
  • The momentum fully shifted in the second quarter as ACU erupted for five unanswered goals. 
  • Ian Bundy ignited the run, followed by another score from Haigh to even things up. 
  • Hayden Wegner, Gavin Waddell, and Blake Smith each found the back of the net to cap the surge, giving the Firestorm a 7-4 lead at halftime.
  • SBCC responded in the third quarter, briefly tying the game at 7-7 with goals from Pacenta, Cleary, and Max Pearson. 
  • However, ACU answered once again with a three-goal burst of their own. 
  • Carson Brown, Haigh, and Waddell all scored to regain control and push the lead to 10-7 entering the final quarter.
  • In the fourth, SBCC made one last push, trimming the deficit to 10-9 after goals from Cleary and Wyatt Anderson. 
  • But the Firestorm closed the door with three straight goals down the stretch. Brown sparked the final run, while Ryan Leonard and Smith added insurance goals to secure the 13-9 victory.
  • ACU won the game, 13-9.

On Saturday, April 11, the Firestorm will host the University of California, San Diego on their home turf one last time at 11am.
