Glendale, Ariz.- In front of an excited women's volleyball crowd in the Firestorm Recreation Center, the Arizona Christian Firestorm swept the Cumberland Phoenix 3-0 on Thursday afternoon. The Firestorm won 25-18, 25-22, and 25-21 to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Madison Van Wie led the Firestorm attack with 13 kills while hitting .423. She recorded five kills in both the first and third sets.
Madison Sherby added eight kills and 12 digs, while
Zuri Reeser contributed seven kills.
Haley Kootstra had five kills on .333 hitting.
- Cumberland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening set before the Firestorm responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead. Two kills from Van Wie, along with a kill and ace from Sherby, sparked the run.
- The Phoenix battled back to tie the set at 14-14, but kills from Sydney Wade and Sherby put ACU in front for good.
- Four lead changes and nine ties highlighted the early stages of the second set.
- With the set tied 11-11, a Van Wie kill broke the deadlock and pushed the Firestorm to the front.
- ACU continued to hold the advantage and closed out the second set 25-22.
- In the third set, Reeser broke a 6-6 tie with a kill.
- The Firestorm kept the lead from there, finishing off the sweep with a 25-21 third-set victory.
Arizona Christian finished the afternoon hitting .195 as a team, while collecting 38 kills and 57 digs.Â
Kiah Lerma produced a match high 17 digs.Â
Becca Thomson had 19 assists and 11 digs.
The Firestorm will return to action on Friday when Arizona Christian hosts Justice at 6:00 pm in the Firestorm Recreation Center.
