Trey Clarkson enters his first year as an assistant men’s basketball coach under head coach Jeff Rutter. Coach Clarkson will assist Coach Jeff Rutter with all facets of the men’s basketball program including: recruiting, scouting, scheduling, and academic support. Coach Clarkson is also the head coach of the prospect development team which plays a 15-20 game schedule against junior colleges and prep schools.
Clarkson joins the firestorm staff after working at Trinity Christian College in Chicago, IL, where he served as the lead assistant coach for four years under head coach Brandon Nicol. Clarkson also served as the director of intramurals and fitness center supervisor during his time at Trinity.
Clarkson attended Western New Mexico University where he was two-year captain and was a first team all-conference player in the NCAA DII RMAC. As a four-year starter for the Mustangs he led them to their first winning season in over 20 years which earned them a spot in the 2008 RMAC semifinals. By the end of his collegiate career, Clarkson had amassed over 1,000 points.
After graduating in 2008 Clarkson went on the play 3 years of professional basketball, two of which were in Australia and one in Italy. His final season in Italy he led the Ascoli Towers to the 2011-2012 serie C championship, and won the finals MVP by averaging 20 ppg for the Towers.
Clarkson also competed in 6 tours with athletes in action under Head Coach John Farwell. During his time with AIA he competed in Israel, Krygyzstan, and the United States.
Originally from Tucson, AZ, Trey graduated from Salpointe Catholic High School in 2004. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in business management from Western New Mexico in 2008. Clarkson then completed his master’s degree in education/coaching in 2015 from Greenville College.
Coach Clarkson has been married to his wife Joanna since the summer of 2013 and they reside in Phoenix, AZ.
