La Mirada, Calif. – Biola University (3-0), ranked number 15 in the NAIA national pre-season coaches' poll, led 13-3 after the first four minutes of the game, led 41-23 at halftime, and stretched its lead to 33 points twice in the second half of its 76-49 victory over visiting Arizona Christian University (1-3), Saturday, Nov. 12, at Chase Gymnasium in La Mirada, Calif.
ACU plays at Northern Arizona University, an NCAA Division I program, Friday, Nov. 18, at 6:35 p.m. The Lumberjacks lost their first two games of the season, by 17 to Louisiana- Lafayette and by 19 to University of San Francisco at USF's Hilltop Challenge Tournament, and are playing North Dakota State at USF on Nov. 13.
Biola out-rebounded ACU, 43-24, and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, blocked 5 ACU shots and stole the ball from the Firestorm nine times. Biola also shot .525 (31-59) from the field with four three-pointers, while Arizona Christian shot just .333 (18-54) from the field with four three- pointers.
6-foot 4 freshman forward Jared Culbert (Henderson, Nev./Coronado H.S.) won praise from ACU head coach Rick Roth after he scored a team-high 10 points, hitting 5 of his 8 shots, and gathered a team-high 5 rebounds. Culbert also passed 2 assists and stole the ball three times from Biola.
Sophomore forward Daniel Cornelius (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Christian H.S./Vanguard University) finished with his season-average of 9 points on 4 of 6 shots but had no rebounds. Senior guard Houston Friend (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) added 6 points with 2 three-pointers and had one steal, and sophomore Jordan Augustine (West Jordan, Utah/Waterford H.S.) contributed 6 points, all on six free throws in six tries, and 4 rebounds, and freshman guard Naheer Mirza (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley H.s./Vanguard Univ.) added 5 points and a rebound. Junior guard A.J. Koch (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Wells H.S.), ACU's second leading scorer last season and third-leading scorer this season, was held scoreless in 14
minutes of action and missed all five of his shots. Sophomore center John Irvine (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy), ACU's scoring co-leader averaging 9.0 points per game, scored just 3 points and added 3 rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.
Sophomore forward Zach Zaragoza led Biola with 20 points, 16 in the first half, and also had 8 rebounds and a blocked shot. Senior guard Lamar Lee added 12 points with 3 three-pointers, 3 rebounds and one steal. Junior guard Chase Adams, added 11 points, 2 three-pointers and 2 rebounds, and junior guard Given Kalipinde gave the Eagles 9 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. 6-foot-7 junior forward Andre Murillo contributed 7 points and 4 rebounds.
