Claremont, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd Scripps College (4-2) recorded its second victory of the season over Arizona Christian University (3-9), defeating the Firestorm, 75-48, in the Dec. 10 match-up between the two schools at Ducey Gymnasium on the CMS campus. The Athenas led 37-22 at halftime and outscored ACU, 38-26, in the second half.
ACU women's basketball, coached by Jerry Conner, concludes its three-game swing through southern California with a Monday, Dec. 12 game at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, at 8 p.m. Arizona time. The Firestorm return home for Dec. 17 (7 p.m.) and Dec. 19 (3 p.m.) games in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium against Dakota Wesleyan University.
ACU's senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.), the leading scorer in both the NAIA Division II and the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Division I with a 24.0 point average, led all scorers with 25 points and hit 8 of 22 shots, 3 three-pointers and 6 of 7 free throws. Liscum also gathered four rebounds, blocked one shot and stole the ball three times. Freshman forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) added 6 points and 6 rebounds, and junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian School) contributed 7 points, one three-pointer, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal. Freshman forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) finished with 5 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals.
Despite competing without its leading scorer and rebounder, 5-foot-11 junior center Frannie Hemmelgarn (16.0 ppg, 8.6 rpg), Claremont out-rebounded ACU, 52-26, and shot .471 for the game (32-68), while ACU shot just .291 from the field (16-55) and committed 24 turnovers. The Athenas also stole the ball from the Firestorm 13 times and blocked four shots.
Guard Madeline Barnes led Claremont with 18 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, and guard Kalika Tullock finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds and one steal. 6-foot-2 center Jennifer Ringeon added 9 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocked shots and 3 steals, and guard Kimberly Scamman contributed 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
