ACU Sets NAIA and School Records in 140-83 Win at Caltech

Win at Cal Tech 

Pasadena, Calif. - Arizona Christian University improved its record to 4-9 with a 140-83 non- conference women's basketball victory at California Institute of Technology (0-4), Monday, Dec. 12, in Braun Athletics Center on the Cal Tech campus. 

ACU recorded a new NAIA record (both divisions) with 127 field goals attempted and posted the third-highest point total in NAIA women's basketball history and the second-best point total in NAIA Division II history with 140 points and also set the school single-game record. ACU also set a single-half record (72 in first half) and also established records for winning margin (57 points) and total field goals attempted (127) and three-point field goals attempted (54). 

With its fourth victory of the season in game 13, ACU also exceeded its team victory total of the 2010-11 season when ACU won 3 of its 21 games. 

ACU women's basketball, coached by Jerry Conner, returns home for Dec. 17 (7 p.m.) and Dec. 19 (3 p.m.) games in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium against Dakota Wesleyan University. 

Six Firestorm players scored 12 or more points and four scored 20 or more and three players recorded double-doubles. ACU also recorded 20 steals and scored 48 points off 46 Cal Tech turnovers, and totaled 45 second-chance points off its school-record 43 offensive rebounds. ACU out-rebounded the Beavers, 72-60. 

Freshman forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) totaled a career-high 35 points, hitting 15 of her 21 shots and one three-pointer, and gathered 16 rebounds, giving Hock her fifth double-double of the season. Hock also passed 3 assists and stole the ball from the Beavers 3 times. Hock already had gained her double-double by halftime with 22 points and 10 rebounds and scored eight consecutive points in a span of 1:13 in the first half when ACU took control of the contest. 

Senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.), the leading scorer in both the NAIA Division II and the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Division I with a 24.0 point average, finished with 22 points, 10 in the first half, and also recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Liscum also made 10 of her 29 shots and 4 of 15 from beyond the three-point arc and contributed 3 assists, one blocked shot and 4 steals. Senior guard Anne Munsil (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) finished with a season- high 22 points, 15 in the first half, on 9 of 17 shots and 3 of 8 three-pointers, and had 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocked shots and one steal. 

Freshman forward Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) added a season-high 19 points, 12 in the first half, 3 three-pointers, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, one blocked shot and one steal, and freshman forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) scored a season-high 20 points, 14 in the second half, and made 10 of her 14 shots, grabbed 7 rebounds, all off the offensive glass, and had 3 steals. Junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian H.S.) finished with 12 points and rebounds for her first double-double of the season and also added 2 three-pointers, 8 assists, one blocked shot and one steal. 

ACU's reserves, which outscored Cal Tech's reserves, 45-20, also included senior guard Elizabeth Inscore (Dayville, Ore./Dayville H.S.), who scored 4 points and had 3 rebounds and 3 steals, junior guard Jessica Smith (Mesa, Ariz./Home Schooled), who added 3 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal, and senior guard Deserae Palomares (Phoenix, Ariz./St. Mary's H.S./South Mountain CC), who had 3 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. 

Four Cal Tech players scored 10 or more points and three players recorded double-doubles. Sophomore guard Rachel Hess leading all scorers in the game with 36 points, 22 in the first half. Hess made 13 of her 29 shots and had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and one steal. Guard Marlyn Moore finished with 21 points, 14 in the second half, and 2 three-pointers, 11 rebounds and 2 steals, and forward Theresa Juarez added 12 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Guard Bridget Conner totaled 10 points and 12 rebounds. 

After making just three of its first 15 shots, ACU made 26 of their last 53 shots in the half and outscored Cal Tech, 64-28, in the last 15 minutes of the first half and led 72-44 at halftime. The Firestorm put together consecutive point streaks of 9 points, 7 points, 15 points and 7 more points during their decisive move that gave them control of the contest. ACU reached its first double-digit lead, 39-29, with 7:52 left on a three-pointer by Heath, gained its first 20-point lead, 52-31, on the fourth consecutive basket by Hock with 4:40 left in the half, and led by as many as 28 points three times in the last 1:03 of the half. 

ACU reached the century mark for the second time this season when Hock scored a lay-up at the 11:39 mark, and exceeded its previous season high of 103 points against Pomona, Nov. 25 (103- 83 win), when Largo's three-pointer at 11:23 gave ACU a 104-67 lead. Another Largo three- pointer at 10:09 put ACU ahead, 110-71, and ACU's gained its first 40-point lead on a jump shot by Brimhall at the 9:28 mark. 

ACU shot .433 from the field for the game (55-127), made 15 of 54 (.278) from three-point range and 15 of 24 free throws (.625), committed 19 turnovers, blocked 7 shots and stole the ball 20 times from Cal Tech. The Beavers shot .388 from the field for the game (31-80), made 2 of 6 three-pointers (.333) and 19 of 28 free throws (.679), committed 46 turnovers, blocked 5 ACU shots and stole the ball from the Firestorm 9 times.
