Phoenix, Ariz. – Anderson University (5-6), from Indiana, dominated a sluggish Arizona Christian University squad (4-12), 54-37, on the boards and led by as many as 17 points three times in the second half of its 67-57 non-conference women's basketball victory over the Firestorm at Fultz Memorial Gymnasium on the ACU campus. Anderson is a member of the NCAA Division III.
Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU hosts a pair of home games next week, meeting Claremont- Mudd Scripps College (5-5) for the third time this season, Monday, Jan. 2, at 3 p.m., and Johnson and Wales University (9-9) from Denver, Colo., Saturday, Jan. 7, at 3 p.m., in Fultz Memorial Gym. Claremont owns two decisive victories over ACU. Two of the nation's top NAIA Division II scorers go head-to-head next Saturday with number two-ranked Steffani Liscum (22.5 ppg) battling number 12-ranked Caitlin Durkin (19.2) from Johnson and Wales. Liscum and Durkin ranked first and second in NAIA Division II in total points scored.
Anderson scored 10 consecutive points in a span of 4:23 and led 22-11 with 6:51 left in the first half, but ACU answered with four three-point field goals during a 12-2 run and sliced the Ravens' lead to 24-23 with 4:27 remaining, and ACU trailed 26-25 with 1:30 left. Anderson scored the final six points on the first half and led 32-25 at intermission.
The Ravens then began the second half with a 14-4 run and took its first 17-point lead, 46-29, with 13:20 left in the game. Three consecutive baskets by Anderson center Hannah Wickard put Anderson ahead, 54-37, with 8:30 left, and the visitors also led 61-44 with 3:15 left to play.
Wickard led all scorers in the game with 24 points and also gathered 11 rebounds and blocked two shots. Guard Amy Wuestefeld also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals, and reserve forward Brittany Stafford added four points and 10 rebounds. Forward Kate Barwick added five points, three rebounds and three assists, and guard Jenna Wittenberg contributed six points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.), the leading scorer in both the NAIA Division II and the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Division I, totaled 14 points, nine in the second half, but made just four of her 20 shots and one of eight from three-point range. Liscum led ACU with nine rebounds and had three assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian H.S.) finished with 12 points, nine in the second half, two three-pointers, two rebounds, six assists and one steal.
Freshman forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) came off the ACU bench for seven point, seven rebounds and three assists but made just two of her nine field goal attempts. Senior guard Anne Munsil (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) finished with seven points, making all four of her free throw attempts, and had three rebounds and three steals.
Anderson shot 41.1 percent from the field for the game (23-56), including a 50.0 percent mark in the second half (12-24), 22.2 percent from three-point range (2-9) and 59.4 percent (19-32) from the free throw line. The Ravens out-rebounded ACU, 54-37, survived 26 turnovers, blocked three shots and stole the ball from ACU seven times.
ACU made just 25.0 percent of its second-half field goals (10-40) and shot 27.7 percent for the game (18-65), and 26.7 percent from behind the three-point arc (8-30) and 76.5 percent (13-17) from the free throw line. The Firestorm committed 19 turnovers, blocked two shots and stole the ball from Anderson nine times.
