Eugene, Ore. - Four Firestorm players scored 11 or more points, and Arizona Christian University (6-13, 4-3 PCAC) led by as many as 12 points in the second half on its way to a 70-63 Pacific Christian Athletics Conference victory at New Hope Christian College (5-18, 2-4 PCAC), Saturday, Jan. 21, in Eugene, Oregon. ACU has won three consecutive games in the last three nights and has emerged victories in four consecutive games, all against PCAC foes.
Coached by Rick Roth, ACU hopes to extend its winning streak with a PCAC game at Multnomah University (10-12, 3-4 PCAC) in Portland, Oregon, Monday, Jan. 23, at 4 p.m. Arizona time, the final game of a four-game, five-day Pacific Northwest road trip.
The score was tied seven times, and the lead exchanged hands 10 times until ACU gained a measure of control late in the second half when the Firestorm led 66-54. New Hope had led 31- 25 in the first half, its biggest lead, and ACU led 33-31 at halftime.
ACU shot 53.8 percent from the field (28-52) for the game and 60.0 percent (15-25) in the second half, while New Hope shot just 39.7 percent from the field (23-58) for the game and 37.0 percent in the first half (10-27). The Firestorm made six of 10 three-pointers (.600) and eight of 13 free throws (.615), out-rebounded NHCC, 37-34, committed 16 turnovers, and stole the ball from the Wildcats 10 times. New Hope made eight of 22 three-pointers (.364) and just nine of 22 free throws (.409), committed 14 turnovers, blocked three shots and stole the ball nine times.
Sophomore forward Daniel Cornelius (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Christian H.S.) led ACU with 17 points off the bench, making seven of his 10 shots, and had two steals, and ACU's reserves outscored NHCC's reserves, 19-5. Junior guard A.J. Koch (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Well H.S.) finished with 14 points, giving him 56 points in three games last week (18.7 ppg), and made one three-pointer and gathered five rebounds. Sophomore guard Albert Suniga (Phoenix, Ariz./Tolleson Union H.S.), ACU's leading scorer (15.2 ppg) and rebounder (5.7 rpg) this
season, totaled 11 points. six rebounds and two steals, and senior guard Houston Friend (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) added 11 points, two three-pointers and three assists and one steal. Freshman forward Bryant Avent (Phoenix, Ariz./Valley Christian H.S.) scored just two points but grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and blocked one shot, and senior point guard Joshua Cole (Phoenix, Ariz./Westview H.S.) contributed seven points, six rebounds, six assists and one steal. Freshman forward Jared Culbert (Henderson, Nev./Coronado H.S.) tossed in eight pints and grabbed three offensive rebounds, passed four assists and stole the ball
once.
New Hope Christian center Forest Stolk led the Wildcats with 16 points and had two rebounds and one blocked shot, and guards Anthony Wallace and Quincy Alexander each scored 12 points. Alexander also passed nine assists and stole the ball from ACU three times, and Wallace gathered three rebounds and stole the ball twice. Guard Cameron Fry tallied nine points, 3 three-pointers, five rebounds, two assists and two steals, and forward Harley Turner contributed nine points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
