Box Score San Diego, CA- On Saturday, Arizona Christian was a couple of key break serves away from thinking about an upset of #6 San Diego Christian but the Hawks won 6-3. Senior Tyler Cawthorne prevailed in both of his matches.
The afternoon started with the men playing doubles. After the Hawks (3-0, 2-0 GSAC) easily won the doubles action on court two, the matches on one and three were a different story. Cawthorne teamed with Sophomore Macen Vargas to handle business on the third court as they won 8-5. Court one was tied at 6-6 before SDCC broke the serve of Sophomore Santiago Galeffi and Junior Seth Moore to pull out the 8-6 win and give the Hawks a 2-1 team edge.
Despite the competitiveness of the action on the court, the first singles match finished was on court two. In the first set, Galeffi and SDCC's Leonardo Urquidi played to a 5-5 tie before Urquidi grabbed the final two games for the 7-5 win. Set two came down to a broken serve again as Qrquidi won 6-4.
Court three went in favor of SDCC as they grabbed a 4-1 edge.
But the next two matches done went the way of the Firestorm (1-3, 0-2 GSAC). After dropping the first set 6-3 and finding himself down 4-1 in the second, Cawthorne came to live and won the next five games for the 6-4 win. After the second set, SDCC's Brendan Aguilar was forced to retire giving Cawthorne the match win. Senior Michael Munguia won in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 for the win on court six.
The Hawks wrapped up the team win with a straight sets win on court four.
In the final match playing on the day, Junior David Castano won the first set 6-2 on court five. Set two saw Castano with a few opportunities at match point. But Jan-Erik Iserman fought back to take the set 7-5 before winning the super tie break third set 10-6.
Head Coach Chris Tolson commented, "We continue to grow as a team! We played our best match so far against the number six team in the nation! We just have to continue to move forward and be ready for the rest of the season!"
The continuation of the season will come quickly as the Firestorm stay in California and face off with NCAA DI UC Riverside on Monday. First serve is set for 2:00 pm (AT)/ 1:00 pm (PT).
