Box Score Phoenix, AZ- Hoping to make a statement, Arizona Christian came up short in that bid as they fell 7-2 to #15 Westmont on Saturday in the GSAC opener for both teams. Senior Michael Munguia and Junior David Castano both won in super tie break fashion to account for the two Firestorm points.
The matched opened with doubles and the Warriors (1-1, 1-0 GSAC) ran the doubles table for a 3-0 lead.
Once singles play began, Westmont won the first three matches to earn the required points needed for the team win.
Super tie break was the name of the game for the final three matches playing.
Castano broke up the WC shutout as he won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second set 6-2. In the super tie break third set, Castano won 10-6 to secure the point.
Senior Tyler Cawthorne and Travis Kimsey split their first sets before Kimsey won 10-7 in the expedited third set on the second court.
The final match playing on the day was court number five. Munguia dropped the first set 6-1 to Tommy Nightingale before responding with a 6-4 second set decision. In the third, Munguia held on for the 10-8 super tie break win.
The Firestorm (1-2, 0-1 GSAC) actually earned a split on the day as they had an evening match scheduled with first year program Benedictine-Mesa. But the Redhawks could field enough players because of eligibility issues and the Firestorm claimed the forfeit win.
Next Saturday, the Firestorm will find themselves at the Lake Murray Tennis Club to meet up with San Diego Christian. That match is slated for a 1:00 pm (AT)/ 12:00 pm (PT) start.
