Box Score Phoenix, AZ- History repeated itself on Saturday as the match between Arizona Christian and Biola resulted in a 5-4 score for the second time this season with the final match determining the team match winner. Unfortunately, this time ACU was on the short end of the score. Just like the first meeting, Junior Seth Moore won both of his matches.
The men started the day on the doubles courts. Moore and Sophomore Macen Vargas put ACU on the right track as they won on court three 8-4. But the Eagles (11-1, 4-5 GSAC) secured the last two doubles matches for the 2-1 edge.
Biola winning doubles turned out to be huge as the singles matches were split down the middle 3-3.
Moore once again was the first match done as he used scores of 6-2 and 6-1 to win on court three.
The Eagles won the next singles event to establish the winning pattern of ACU, BU, ACU, BU, ACU, and BU.
Senior Michael Munguia and Junior Ezequiel Suarez won their matches 6-2, 6-0 and 7-6, 6-1 respectively.
In the final match on court one, Senior Tyler Cawthorne won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second set 6-3 to set up the deciding third set. Cawthorne and Philip Westwood exchanged action all the way to a 6-6 tie. But Westwood won the final game to win their singles match and the team match.
With the loss, the Firestorm fell to the fourth seed in the upcoming GSAC tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. With San Diego Christian removing themselves from post season competition, ACU claims the fourth seed despite finishing fifth and will face fifth seed Hope International. ACU and HIU will face other at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 19. The winner will face the top seed (probably Westmont) on Wednesday, April 20, at 12:00 pm.
