Stumble In Doubles, Rebound In Singles

Box Score

Glendale, AZ- Playing away from their traditional home, Arizona Christian dropped two of three doubles matches against NCAA DII Colorado Mesa at Paseo Racquet Center on Friday night.  But the Firestorm responded by sweeping singles for the 7-2 win.  Sophomore Alberto Lapiedra won both of his matches.

Lapiedra teamed up with Senior Seth Moore and won fairly quickly 8-4 on court one.  The Firestorm (8-4) had their chances in the other two doubles matches but the Mavericks (4-4) pulled off 9-7 wins and a 2-1 team lead.

Head Coach Chris Tolson told his team between doubles and singles to only worry about the things each could control- staying within themselves and playing their best.

The Firestorm listened as they won all six singles matches in straight sets.

Junior Marcelo Balderrama gave up the fewest games as he won 6-3 and 6-0 on court four.

Senior Ezequiel Suarez and Junior Santiago Galeffi dropped just five games each as they both won 6-1 and 6-4.

Sophomore Scott Wheeler (6-4 and 6-2) and Lapiedra (6-3 and 6-3) were winners on courts five and one.

On court two, Sophomore Enzo Douillac needed an extra game in the first set winning 7-5 before a 6-4 win in the second set.

The Firestorm are supposed to return to GSAC play on Saturday as they host Hope international at 1:00 pm.  But rain is forecasted all day so the Paseo courts may be unplayable.
