Late Push by Ottawa (Kan.) Spoils Firestorm's Strong Outing

Glendale, Ariz. – Arizona Christian jumped out early and matched Ottawa pitch for pitch through the middle innings, but a late surge by the Braves handed the Firestorm a 4–2 loss as they opened up the East West Challenge tournament on the ACU Baseball Field. Joey Genduso led the way offensively with his second home run of the season, while Jacob Solis accounted for ACU's other hit. On the mound, the Firestorm pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts and held Ottawa to five hits.

  • ACU struck first in the opening inning, taking advantage of early pressure on the bases. 
  • Noah Manasan came home on a passed ball to give the Firestorm a 1–0 lead, setting the tone in what quickly developed into a low-scoring pitcher's duel.
  • ACU led 1-0 at the end of the first inning. 
  • Frank Wierman delivered a strong start on the mound for ACU, working six solid innings while allowing just two runs on three hits. 
  • The left-hander struck out nine and kept Ottawa off balance, escaping multiple jam situations to preserve the lead into the fifth.
  • Ottawa finally broke through in the fifth, hitting a double and another passed ball to even the score and move ahead 2–1. 
  • Ottawa led 2-1 at the end of the fifth inning.

  • A sacrifice fly brought home the go-ahead run before an RBI single extended the Braves' lead to 4–2.
  • ACU had chances throughout the night, drawing six walks, but managed just two hits against Ottawa's bullpen. 
  • Despite a late push, the Firestorm were unable to close the gap in the final innings.
  • ACU lost the game, 4-2.
