Inside The Games

Game One
vs Colorado School of Mines
  • ACU set the tone immediately Friday night against Colorado School of Mines. After conceding the game's first goal, the Firestorm erupted for six unanswered scores in the opening period and never looked back.
  • Carson Brown and Gavin Waddell led the charge with a total of five goals. Brown recorded a first-quarter hat trick as ACU built a dominating 6-1 advantage, while Waddell added two goals in the opening frame and continued to pressure the defense throughout the night.
  • The Firestorm extended their lead to 11-5 by halftime behind balanced scoring from Kale Parthen and Kellen Haigh, each of whom found the net twice. Despite a brief push from Mines in the second and third periods, ACU answered every run. Waddell and Brown combined for three more goals in the second half to seal the victory.
  • ACU won 16-9.

Game Two vs Long Beach State
  • Saturday's matchup with Long Beach State was a different story — one defined by momentum swings and late drama.
  • ACU again opened strong, racing to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter. Waddell continued his torrid weekend, scoring twice in the opening frame while also assisting on Denver Farlett's goal. The Firestorm looked firmly in control early.
  • But Long Beach State responded with a seven-goal second quarter to flip the momentum and take an 8-6 lead before ACU steadied itself late in the half.
  • The third quarter belonged to the Firestorm. Waddell delivered one of the most dominant stretches of the weekend, scoring four times in the period as ACU erupted for six goals and reclaimed a 14-9 advantage entering the fourth.
  • The visitors refused to fold.
  • Long Beach State stormed back with seven fourth-quarter goals, tying the game at 16-16 despite late tallies from Ryan Leonard and Hayden Wegner to keep ACU within striking distance. In overtime, the Beach capitalized on a final opportunity, netting the game-winner to hand the Firestorm a narrow 17-16 defeat.
  • ACU lost 17-16.
