Maccagnano Named Inaugural Women's Flag Football Head Coach

Arizona Christian University (ACU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Maccagnano as the inaugural Head Coach of the Women's Flag Football program. This historic appointment marks the launch of ACU's flag football program, the first varsity intercollegiate program in the state of Arizona!

Maccagnano brings extensive experience in flag football, most recently coaching at Hamilton High School and winning the Arizona 6A high school girls flag football championship!  In addition to his role as assistant coach at Hamilton High School, Coach Maccagnano also served as the Defensive Coordinator for Arizona State University's club women's flag football team.

"We are thrilled to welcome Coach Maccagnano to lead our new Women's Flag Football program," said Dr. Peter Dryer, ACU's Director of Athletics. "His track record of developing talented athletes and his alignment with our Christian mission make him a great candidate to build our program from the ground up."

Maccagnano's recent achievements include coaching athletes that compete on the USA National Team, and coaching for the prestigious US Army All-American Bowl.  Additionally, he has led the Club HBHF 17U girls flag football program to both regional and national success.

"I am honored to accept this position and excited to build a competitive program that aligns with ACU's mission," said Maccagnano. "Our goal is to recruit talented student-athletes who will represent the university's values both on and off the field. With my connections throughout Arizona and neighboring states, we're positioned to attract top talent and build a program that will compete at the highest level."

Coach Maccagnano also brings valuable officiating experience with the Arizona Interscholastic Association and CAA, including officiating state championships in both tackle and flag football.

Under Maccagnano's leadership, the program will emphasize both athletic excellence and character development, reflecting ACU's commitment to Christian values and comprehensive student development. His experience coaching the 2023 Arizona State Offensive Player of the Year, multiple All-State honorees, and US National Team athletes demonstrates his ability to develop high-performing student-athletes.

The Women's Flag Football program will begin competition in the 2025-26 academic year, adding to ACU's growing athletic department. The university looks forward to this exciting new chapter in Firestorm Athletics.
