Vanguard Vaults Past Firestorm

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Arizona Christian Firestorm softball team saw their winning streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon; as they dropped both games with the Vanguard Lions by finals of 7-3 and 11-3 at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix, Arizona.

With the losses, the Arizona Christian Firestorm fall to 16-6 overall and 4-4 in GSAC play. With the victories, the Vanguard Lions; who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll improve to 24-6 overall and 9-3 in GSAC play.

"Today was a good test for us," said ACU head coach Jay Pyron. "Vanguard is a solid team and at the top of the league right now. We hit some balls hard today, but we have to improve in each area to achieve what we want to achieve. Today was good feedback, to see where we are and it showed us how we need to get tougher. We will keep getting better and we will be ready for Thursday!"

The Firestorm saw their program best 10 game winning streak come to a close on Tuesday afternoon, when the Vanguard Lions came to Phoenix.

In game one, the Firestorm scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on an Abby Beasley homerun. From there on out, it was all the Lions.

Vanguard scored seven runs in the top of the second inning to take a 7-1 lead over the Firestorm. ACU scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning; but that would be it as they fell 7-3.

Abby Beasley finished game one by going 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored, two RBI's and a walk. Jackie Aguilar (7-4) took the loss; lasting just four innings and allowing seven runs; just one earned on eight hits with two strikeouts.

Game two featured a combined 25 hits, but when it was all said and done, the Vanguard Lions came out victorious 11-3. The Lions struck for a run in the first inning, another run in the second inning, two runs in both the third and fourth innings, a run in the fifth inning and four runs in the seventh inning to cap the 11-3 victory.

The Firestorm 3-4 hitters went 5-for-7 combined with three runs and three RBI's. ACU starter Ashlynn Preciado (4-1) went 2.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with three walks in the loss.

The Firestorm will remain at home in Phoenix, as they welcome the University of Antelope Valley to on both Thursday and Friday. Friday's games are scheduled for 3pm and 5pm at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex.
