Box Score 2 PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Arizona Christian Firestorm softball team swept their doubleheader against the Embry-Riddle Eagles by finals of 18-5 and 11-7 at the Embry-Riddle Softball Field in Prescott, Arizona on Tuesday afternoon.
With the sweep, the Arizona Christian Firestorm improve to 25-13 overall, while Embry-Riddle falls to 8-28 overall with the losses.
Arizona Christian got the offense going quickly on Tuesday afternoon against the Eagles from Embry-Riddle. The Firestorm scored their first run of the ballgame on a Brittany Vanderdrink RBI single that scored Meaghen Nelson in the top of the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead.
From there on out, ACU scored each half inning on their way to an 18-5 run rule victory over the Eagles. The Firestorm scored four runs in the top of the second inning, four runs in the third inning, five runs in the fourth inning and another four runs in the fifth inning.
All in all, the Firestorm scored 18 runs on 18 hits in game one. Jasmine Aguilar went a perfect 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot with four runs scored, five RBI's and a pair of walks. Meaghen Nelson went a perfect 5-for-5 in the second spot in the batting order with three runs scored and three RBI's. Presley Whetman also went 4-for-4 in the seven hole with four runs scored and an RBI.
Firestorm starter Jackie Aguilar (12-7) went four innings and allowed four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and just one walk in the victory.
Game two was a closer affair between the two teams, as they combined for 18 runs on 25 hits. The teams also combined for seven total errors.
Arizona Christian got the scoring going with a five run top of the first inning. The inning was capped off by an Eden Sheldon two-run homer.
Embry-Riddle answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and then three runs in the bottom of the third inning. After three complete innings, ACU led by just one run at 6-5.
The Firestorm extended their lead with a two-run homer by Abby Beasley in the top of the fourth inning, to make it 8-5. The Eagles once again responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth; capitalizing on a Firestorm error to cut the ACU lead to one run at 8-7.
ACU scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach for good, as they held on for the 11-7 victory in game two.
Patricia Porter (6-1) picked up the win for the Firestorm, going all seven innings while allowing seven runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Offensively for the Firestorm, Abby Beasley went 3-for-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored and Brittany Vanderdrink went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Firestorm will take on the Eagles from Embry-Riddle in Prescott for two more games on Wednesday afternoon at 2pm and 4pm, before the team breaks for spring break. The Firestorm will be back in Phoenix on Tuesday April 14th, when they host Hope International University in their regular season home finale.
