Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Arizona Christian Firestorm softball team split Saturday's doubleheader with the Carroll College Saints by finals of 4-2 and 0-3 at Sandra Day O'Connor in Phoenix.
The Firestorm move to 6-4 overall on the season, while Carroll College moves to 3-13 overall with the split.
Game one featured a low scoring ballgame similar to Friday's games; with Jackie Aguilar (3-3) picking up her second win in as many days. Aguilar went the distance, allowing just two runs; one earned on seven hits to go along with seven strikeouts.
Offensively the Firestorm got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, by a sac-fly and a passed ball to take the early 2-0 lead after an inning of play.
ACU got on the board again in the fourth inning on an error and then scored their fourth and final run on an Eden Sheldon RBI single in the fifth inning that scored Abby Beasley.
Carroll College would go on to score two runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as ACU held on for the 4-2 victory.
"The first game we got our job done and won, but we were not playing to our full potential," said Alyssa Vanderdrink. "We had Jackie (Aguilar) pitch an amazing game and she did a great job holding Carroll to two runs."
Game two featured fantastic pitching and good defense in a low-scoring affair. The Firestorm were looking to finish off the four-game sweep of Carroll College, but the Fighting Saints had something to say about it.
In the top of the sixth inning, Carroll College scored the first two runs of the ballgame on a pair of Firestorm errors; ACU finished the game with three errors total.
The Fighting Saints then tacked on a third run on an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning for good measure to seal the 3-0 victory.
Destinee Spencer (1-1) suffered the loss, as she tossed six innings that saw her allow two runs; one earned on six hits to go along with three walks and three strikeouts.
"We were really pleased with the way the pitchers threw in both games," said ACU head coach Jay Pyron. "It was encouraging to see the fight and the heart the girls showed in the 7th inning of the last game. There were a lot of good at-bats and we just didn't get the break when we needed it. There's a lot of things that we need to improve on to get better and that is what we are trying to do each day; take the next step!"
The busy stretch of games continues for the Firestorm, as they hit the road down to Tucson, Arizona for a pair of games on Sunday against Siena Heights and Robert Morris in the Tucson Invitational Games. ACU will then have off Monday, before traveling to Fullerton, California on Tuesday for a doubleheader with Hope International University and then the Firestorm return home for a doubleheader on Wednesday against Crown College.
