Box Score 2 Phoenix, AZ- On the strength of a three run blast by Senior Abby Beasley and a grand slam homer by Junior Taylor Fabing, Arizona Christian swept #20 Biola 4-0 and 9-1 on Friday.
In the opener at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex, Senior Jackie Aguilar (5-2) threw a 1-2-3 first inning before running into a little trouble in the second. Facing a situation with runners at second and third and one out, Aguilar escaped troubled by inducing a rare 4-3-2-5 double play- grounder to second, out recorded at first, throw home, and runner tagged out headed back to third.
Aguilar did not allow multiple base runners the rest of the way by spreading out three hits and a walk in the final five innings as she went threw a complete game shutout- her second such effort of the season.
In the bottom of the third, Beasley gave Aguilar all the cushion she would need. After Freshman Jenna Castilleja dropped a single just inside the right field line, Junior Sianna Gomez reached on a fielder's choice, and Senior Alyssa Vanderdrink singled to her shortstop counterpart Beasley stepped in and crushed her third home run of the season to dead center for the 3-0 edge.
In the fourth, the Firestorm (11-4-1, 3-1 GSAC) added one more run after Fabing walked, Aguilar doubled, and Fabing scored on a fielder's choice. The 4-0 ACU win snapped a 12 game losing streak to Biola dating back to 2013.
The Eagles (11-12-1, 1-3 GSAC) came out and used a single, sacrifice bunt, and another single to grab a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game two. Junior Destinee Spencer (5-1) allowed multiple base runners in the second, third, and fourth innings before retiring the final seven batters she faced to surrender just the one run for the win.
With runners on first and second in the third, Beasley sent a double to right center to score Gomez and Vanderdrink and move ACU out to a 2-1 edge.
Moving ahead to the fifth, Beasley, Junior Kylie Christman, and Senior Meaghen Nelson all singled with two outs to load the bases. Fabing sent a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for the grand slam- her first homer of the season.
Leading 6-1 playing in the bottom of the sixth, ACU needed three runs to bring the game to a close. Thanks to a BU error that ultimately kept the inning alive, Arizona Christian cashed in three unearned runs on a double by Christman and game ending RBI single by Nelson.
On Saturday, the Firestorm will turn right around and host Vanguard for two games. The double header is set to start at 12:00 pm (AT)/11:00 am (PT) at Shadow Mountain High School. Biola will head up to play Embry-Riddle in Prescott on Saturday.
