Box Score 2 Tucson, AZ- Junior Destinee Spencer pitched the Firestorm to a split in their first day at the Tucson Invitational on Tuesday. ACU was knocked off 13-6 by Olivet Nazarene before winning 10-1 against Aquinas.
In the first game against Olivet Nazarene, the Firestorm (9-2-1) actually scored first with a run in the first and second. Both runs were walks cashed in on an error in the first and a double by Sophomore Ashlynn Preciado in the second.
The Tigers (4-4) responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Both teams remained locked at two until the top of the sixth when ONU pushed across six runs. They added five more runs in the top of the seventh.
ACU answered with three in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh but it was nowhere near enough. A double by Junior Kylie Christman was the highlight of both innings.
Second game of the day against Aquinas was a breeze for Arizona Christian.
Four of the first five batters reached in the bottom of the first and all came in to score. Junior Sianna Gomez and Seniors Abby Beasley and Alyssa Vanderdrink all singled before another Christman double. Junior Taylor Fabing produced an RBI double of her own.
With one out in the second, ACU used the same four players with Senior Meaghen Nelson added into the mix to collect five straight hits and score three runs.
In the fourth, ACU capitalized on an error, three walks, and a single to plate three more runs.
Meanwhile, Spencer scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run over five innings to keep the mercy rule in effect.
The Firestorm will again play in Tucson on Wednesday.
