Box Score Irvine, CA- After sweeping their way through doubles, things looking promising for Arizona Christian against former GSAC foe Concordia on Friday. But the Eagles answered back by winning five of the six singles matches for the 5-4 win. Junior Ezequiel Suarez was the lone Firestorm to win in singles.
Beginning with doubles, Sophomore Santiago Galeffi and Senior Michael Munguia opened the scoring with a nice 8-3 win on doubles court two.
The last two doubles matches required much more effort and then some to go in ACU's favor. Senior Tyler Cawthorne and Suarez fought through a 7-7 tie for the 9-7 win on court one. Junior Seth Moore and Sophomore Macen Vargas played even tighter on court three as their match was tied at 8. But securing the ninth point gave them the match and ACU a 3-0 lead.
Once singles began, the Eagles (4-12) quickly tied the team match at 3-3 after winning the first three singles matches to finish. They moved ahead 4-3 after CUI's Man Hon Ko held off Moore 6-3 in the first set and then 7-5 in the second set.
Suarez was on his game as he pulled off 6-3 and 6-4 wins on the fourth singles court. The win for Suarez knotted the match at 4-4 to set up the thrilling finish.
Galeffi started out on the right foot as he won 6-4 in the first set on court one. But a 6-1 second set win by Filip Burnac set up a winner take all third set. Unfortunately, Burnac repeated the same 6-1 result against Galeffi and the Eagles walked off the court victorious.
On Saturday, the Firestorm (5-13) will meet up with Hope International at the La Habra Tennis Center for a 1:00 pm first serve.
