Box Score 2 Tucson, AZ- Opening their weekend participation at the Tucson Invitational, Arizona Christian used a walk-off hit to end both games as they won 4-3 over Madonna and 10-2 in five innings over Bethany Lutheran on Thursday. Sophomore Anely Marcilla earned both wins in relief. Junior Chelsea Havill homered.
Against Madonna, Senior Sianna Gomez opened her big day (6-7, 2B, and 3 runs scored) with a single and stolen base then scored the first run of the game.
In the top of the second, the Crusaders (9-8) scored a run before Gomez singled and scored again in the bottom of the third.
Madonna scored the next two runs and a held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. But Havill launched her first home run as a Firestorm over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
Marcilla came on in the top of the seventh and after giving up a walk, sacrifice, and single stranded the potential go ahead run at third.
Facing the possibility of extra innings, Sophomore Jenna Castilleja singled to begin the bottom of the seventh. She then stole second and moved up to third on the errant throw trying to catch her stealing. Gomez promptly ended the game by banging a single into center to score Castilleja in walk-off fashion.
Game two of the day saw the Vikings (2-10) score single runs in the second and third. The rest of the game belonged to the Firestorm (9-11).
Senior Meaghen Nelson leadoff the bottom of the second with a single followed by a walk to Freshman Hilaria Stewart-who also started the game in the circle. A double steal moved Nelson and Stewart into scoring position. Nelson came home on a groundout. Castilleja doubled to left center to cash in Stewart.
Knotted 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth, ACU exploded for seven runs. Junior Bridget Kruck started the inning with a triple. Five singles, two outs, and an error brought Kruck back to the dish and she delivered a two RBI single to give Arizona Christian a 9-2 cushion.
Three straight hits- Castilleja single, Gomez double, and single by pitch hit Freshman Ariana Garcilazo that scored Castilleja- created the eight run mercy rule and ended the game.
Marcilla improved to 4-0 on the season after pitching the final two innings and only allowing a walk.
On Friday, the Firestorm will remain in action at the Tucson Invitational at Lincoln Park. They will begin their triple header day with a 1:30 pm game against the University of Jamestown.
