Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Santee, CA- Needing two wins and help to keep their season alive, the help actually came through but ACU lost both games- 7-2 and then 13-5- to San Diego Christian on Saturday. The Firestorm scored their runs in single innings of the two games. Junior Chelsea Havill homered.
Senior Sianna Gomez, the only Firestorm to play in all 53 games of the season, opened the afternoon with a single to left but nothing came of the lead-off baserunner. However, the Hawks (24-21, 11-13 GSAC) capitalized on their hit to begin the bottom of the first as they batted around and scored four runs.
After the Firestorm (26-27, 7-17 GSAC) went down in order in the top of the second, SDCC scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning to build a 6-0 edge.
With two outs in the fourth, Sophomore Taylor Babbitt found an opening through the right side for a single. Havill then deposited her fifth home run of the season- which tied her for the team high- over the left field fence to get ACU on the scoreboard.
Despite doubles from Senior Destinee Spencer and Gomez in the sixth and seventh, Arizona Christian could not add any more runs. San Diego Christian added one more.
Junior Ashlynn Preciado started the game with Spencer following in relief. The duo did not allow a walk and gave up just one extra base hit but that was not enough to slow the Hawks.
Game two saw SDCC put up a three spot in the second.
ACU countered with a five run fourth inning to briefly grab a 5-3 lead. Havill and Senior Meaghen Nelson both walked with a fielder's choice sandwiched in between the free passes. Junior Bridget Kruck doubled home a run. Sophomore Jenna Castilleja and Gomez walked ahead of RBI singles from Junior Cheyann Michael and Sophomore Anely Marcilla.
However, the Hawks used a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth to move back in front and not look back. They scored five in the fifth and used an unearned run in the sixth to end the game and ACU season.
Odd fact, the overall 26 wins for ACU were actually the fourth most in the GSAC to end the regular season- more wins than two playoff teams. But teams qualify through their GSAC wins.
