Box Score 2 Phoenix, AZ- Arizona Christian made a move back into the playoff hunt as they swept Biola 11-10 in walk-off fashion and then held on to win 8-4 in the night cap. Freshman Paige Church (doubled and homered) and Senior Meaghen Nelson (2 doubles) were both 4-7 with 5 RBI.
Junior Ashlynn Preciado and Nelson started the scoring with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the first inning in game one.
That lead was very short lived as the Eagles (19-16-2, 6-10 GSAC) answered with six runs in the top of the second and a single run in the third to grab a 7-1 lead.
However, the Firestorm (25-20, 7-11 GSAC) countered with the next eight runs of the contest. Sophomore Anely Marcilla started the comeback with an RBI single in the third. Nelson cashed in all three runs in the fourth with a double to right. A two run home run by Church (the first of her collegiate career) highlighted the three run fifth. Sophomore Jenna Castilleja eventually scored behind the home run on a sacrifice fly. After walking in the sixth, Church scored on a passed ball to give ACU a 9-7 edge.
In the top of the seventh, ACU threw the ball around the field and allowed Biola to grab a 10-9 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Preciado walked, Nelson singled, and Sophomore Taylor Babbitt singled after an out to load the bases. A force out at home created two outs but left the bases loaded. Church stepped up as the final hope and parachuted a double just inside the left line that chased home Nelson and Babbitt for the walk-off win in the two hour and forty-four minute marathon.
Marcilla pitched the final five innings to earn the win and improve to 9-3 on the year.
Game two saw Biola open the game with a pair of runs.
However, Arizona Christian responded with seven runs in the bottom frame. ACU only had three hits in the inning as they were gifted seven walks including four in a row at one point.
Following a Babbitt double, Church drove her home with a single in the fourth. Then in the fifth Preciado sent her third home run of the season over the left center field fence- a two run shot scoring Junior Cheyann Michael as well- and ACU oved out to a 10-4 lead.
But an error in the sixth opened the door for the Eagles to hit back-to-back home runs (three run shot by Selina Sherlin and solo by Areana Ramos) to climb within 10-8.
After the Firestorm left a lead-off single stranded in the sixth, the Eagles tried rally as they runners at the corners in the seventh. But a batted ball hit the runner going to second to end the game.
Freshman Hilaria Stewart started the game but Senior Destinee Spencer (5-2) threw the final four innings for the win.
Head Coach Trisha Thurston stated, "Today was big for us. Proud of them for never giving up and fighting all the way through. It wasn't perfect and it wasn't pretty at times, but they showed a lot of grit and toughness to withstand Biola. It's going to be a battle from here on out, and I'm thankful we came out on top today."
On Saturday, the Firestorm will turn right around and host #17 Vanguard at Sandra Day O'Connor High School at 12:00 pm. The four seniors playing in their final home twin bill will be honored before the games.
