Late Home Runs Not Enough

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Phoenix, AZ- Softball showed late power surges on Saturday but could not catch Vanguard in either game as they were swept 9-2 and 6-4.  Junior Chelsea Havill notched a three run homer in the finale.

An unearned run for the Lions (39-9, 16-4 GSAC) in the second was answered with an unearned run for the Firestorm (25-22, 5-13 GSAC) in the fourth thanks to an RBI single by Sophomore Jenna Castilleja.

Vanguard broke the 1-1 tie with a three run fifth and a five run seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Junior Ashlynn Preciado crushed a solo home run off the top of the scoreboard in left center for her team leading fourth home run.  ACU would not get any closer.

Game two started with VU scoring a run in the first and two runs in the second.  They repeated the 1-2 format with a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Odd fact, ACU pitching did not produce a 1-2-3 inning in either game.

Down 6-0 with two out in the seventh, ACU started to make some noise of a comeback.  Freshman Paige Church singled up the middle followed by a single through the left side by Sophomore Anely Marcilla.  An error kept the inning alive and allowed a run to score.  Havill then stepped up and sent a three run shot over the left field fence- her third of the season.  But a groundout ended the rally and the game.

Prior to the games, the Firestorm honored their four seniors playing in their final home games- Destinee Spencer, Meaghen Nelson, Sianna Gomez, and Yvette Ortega.

The Firestorm will take a week off in countable contests before wrapping up the regular season with a three double header trip to California.  That trip will open with two at Saint Katherine on Thursday (April 20) at 12:00 pm.  The games appear they will be played at the Poway Sports Complex.
