Preciado And Homers Lead to Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Phoenix, AZ- On the strength of Senior Ashlynn Preciado throwing a one hit shutout and both teams showing off their power, the Firestorm won game one 8-0 against Goshen before the Maple Leafs came back for the 12-6 night cap win.

The Firestorm came ready to go as they plated seven combined runs in the first two innings.  Senior Bridget Kruck drew a walk to start the bottom of the first.  An error kept the inning alive for Junior Taylor Babbitt to drive in a run and Freshman Shae Bushey to single home two more.

In the bottom of the second, Senior Cheyann Michael walked ahead of Junior Kylee Brown blasting a two run home run to dead center and beyond.  Senior Chelsea Havill singled after the home run and Sophomore Paige Church doubled right behind her.  Babbitt earned another RBI and a throwing error made the game 7-0 ACU.

Preciado (3-2) allowed single base runners including the one hit in the last four innings but induced three double plays to escape trouble.

Needing a run in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the mercy rule, Church deposited the second pitch of the half inning over the right center fence for the "walk-off" win.

Game two started in nearly the same fashion for the teams as a single, stolen base, and two straight sacrifice bunts scored a run for Goshen.  Kruck followed by wearing a pitch, moving up on a sacrifice bunt, and stealing two bases including home as part of a double steal for a 1-1 tie.

Extreme small ball in the third saw the Firestorm (6-7) score three runs on just one hit as the only ball that traveled past the pitcher.  Senior Alyssa Rodriguez scored the first of the three runs.

After five innings, ACU held a 5-4 lead.

But then the Maple Leafs (7-10) woke up their bats in the bottom of the six as they hit two home runs including a grand slam to put up an eight spot in the line score.

Brown doubled and scored in the seventh but 12-6 was as close as ACU would manage.

Sophomore Hilaria Stewart (2-1) was charged with the loss.

On Friday, the Firestorm faced an odd situation with Benedictine-Mesa.  Scheduled to play at BenMesa, the Redhawks were unable to use their field so the twin bill has been moved to the Rose Mofford Sports Complex.  ACU will remain the visiting team but now on their home field.  First pitch is still scheduled for 11:00 am.
