Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Costa Mesa, CA- Arizona Christian Softball dropped their two games in the GSAC tournament on Tuesday to see their season come to an end. In game one, the fifth seeded Firestorm lost 5-1 to Menlo before falling 9-1 to Vanguard in their second game.
Playing the first game of the tournament against fourth seed Menlo, the Oaks scored a run in the first and four in third with only a combined two hits in those innings. Walks and errors resulted in only two of those five runs being earned.
Senior Ashlynn Preciado started the game- her ACU record 63rd start of her career- and went 2.2 innings giving up all the runs. Junior Anely Marcilla threw 3.1 scoreless innings behind Preciado.
The Firestorm had only one hit through four innings (a single by Senior Chelsea Havill in the third). ACU crept closer and tallied a run on the scoreboard in the fifth when Freshman Elsy Guzman reached on an error and Sophomore Tatumn Porras doubled her home.
But a double from Junior Taylor Babbitt in the sixth was the only other base runner in game one for ACU.
Facing the host team, second seed, and number seven Vanguard in their second game, Arizona Christian was the designated home team.
The Lions scored a run in the top of the first. However, the Firestorm countered with a run in the bottom of the inning after Senior Bridget Kruck walked, Havill singled, and Babbitt score Kruck on a sacrifice bunt for the 1-1 tie.
Vanguard scored five runs in the third and three runs in the fifth to build a 9-1 edge.
Needing to score a run in the bottom of the fifth to continue the game and their season, the Firestorm loaded the bases on a single from Porras, single by Preciado, a fielder's choice, and a Kruck single (who went 2-2 with a walk). But a double play ended the threat, game, and season for ACU.
Marcilla, Sophomore Hilaria Stewart, and Preciado all threw in the circle.
The Firestorm close out their year at 15-28.
