Hayes Leads ACU Sweep of BenMesa

Glendale, Ariz.- On the strength of Sophomore Helen Hayes throwing a complete game shutout in game one, Arizona Christian swept Benedictine-Mesa on Tuesday afternoon.

Inside Game One

  • A single, double play, strikeout was the Redhawks' first inning against Hayes
  • Buckley homered leading off the bottom of the first inning
  • Guzman singled home Schleisman for a 2-0 lead after one
  • Schleisman cashed in Buckley in the third
  • The Firestorm batted around in the fourth and scored five runs without benefit of an extra base hit
  • Hayes ended the first four innings with a strikeout (the first three were looking)

Inside Game Two

  • BenMesa walked twice in the first and both walks came around to score
  • The Redhawks made it 3-0 after adding a run in the top of the third
  • ACU answered with four unearned runs in the third- 2 RBI single from Garcia and RBI triple from Guzman
  • BenMesa tied the score before an RBI single from Buckley gave ACU a 5-4 edge
  • The single by Buckley pushed her hit streak to ten games
  • Brown scored the final run of the game in the sixth
  • The Redhawks loaded the bases in the seventh but Roberts induced a ground ball back to herself to secure the win

"What a great day of softball. We were blessed to get all our girls an opportunity to play on our new field. It was truly a team win and we feel like we are finally hitting our stride. God is always Good and always on time, His timing is perfect."

On Saturday, the Firestorm must sweep OUAZ to keep their season alive and force a GSAC East single deciding game on April 24.First pitch in Surprise at Willow Canyon High School is set for 12:00 pm.
