Albuquerque, NM – The Firestorm Track & Field program traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to participate in the Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico. It was a great opportunity for the teams to test themselves against some of the best talent in the nation. Competing against historic programs like the University of Texas, Stanford, California, University of Arizona, and Grand Canyon University, the Firestorm held its own and was able to outperform some NCAA Division one and two athletes.
There were many bright moments and multiple personal records (PR) over the two-day meet. Some stand out accomplishments were:
-Freshman
Georgia Gomez ran the 60-meter dash in 8.15 seconds, tying the school record.
-Sophomore
McKenna Rogers pole vaulted 11'-.75", an indoor school record
and a season best for Rogers.
-Freshman
Shaylee Quenzer ran the 400-meter dash in 1:02.2, a PR and tied for 3rd all-time in the ACU school records list.
-Sophomore
Cheney Gomez threw the shot put 33'-11.75", placing her #3 all-time for women throwers at ACU.
Thoughts from Head Coach Brian Bell
"The coaching staff and I are pleased with the team's progress and how well they competed with the 'big dogs.' This was some of the best competition we have faced in the eleven years ACU has had a track and field program. The team met the challenge and will leave the University of New Mexico with some newfound confidence."
