Box Score

PHOENIX, Ariz. --- The Arizona Christian University Firestorm baseball team defeated the William Jessup Warriors by a final of 5-1 in game one of their three game series on Friday afternoon at Firestorm Field.

The Firestorm improve to 5-11 on the season and 5-11 in GSAC play. With the loss, the William Jessup Warriors fall to 3-11 overall and 3-11 in GSAC play.

It was a pitcher's duel through the first six innings on Friday afternoon. The visiting Warriors got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, when Wade Brill hit a ball to AJ Arroyo; who committed an error at second base. The error allowed Garrett Ferreira to score from third and give William Jessup the early 1-0 lead.

After a few more scoreless frames, the Firestorm bats came alive; striking for four runs in the seventh inning. AJ Arroyo got things started with a solo homerun. Cody Rose came up later in the inning and drew a bases loaded walk that scored Christopher Burks. Jesse Poweziak then came to the plate, and also drew a bases loaded walk to score Anthony Balderama. Then a third straight bases loaded walk; issued to pinch-hitter Brody Ryan allowed Tate Erickson to score the innings final run.

Arizona Christian got another insurance run in the eighth inning, on a Tate Erickson RBI single, that scored Christopher Burks to make the score 5-1.

Firestorm starter Tommy Lay (2-2) went the distance, surrendering a run; it was unearned on five hits, to go along with five strikeouts and two walks in the victory.

The Firestorm will close out this three-game set, with a doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday) at home, beginning at 11am. Following this series, the Firestorm hit the road on March 6th and 7th for a three-game set against the San Diego Christian Hawks. Game one is set for Friday at 2pm in San Diego.
