Box Score COSTA MESA, CA --- The Arizona Christian University Firestorm baseball team defeated the Vanguard Lions by a final of 1-0 in game one of their three game series on Friday afternoon at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California.
The Firestorm improve to 3-4 on the season and 3-4 in GSAC play. With the loss, the Vanguard Lions fall to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in GSAC play.
It was a pitcher's duel throughout on Friday afternoon. As usual, the Firestorm struck early with a run in the top of the first inning. Christopher Burks led the game off with a homerun; his first of the season to put ACU up 1-0.
From there, Firestorm starter Tommy Lay (2-1) took over. Lay went seven innings in the victory, while splattering six hits to go along with his four strikeouts and one walk. Dean Jackson relieve Tommy Lay to start the eighth inning. In relief, Jack pitched a scoreless two innings while striking out one and walking one.
Sean Isaac took the loss for Vanguard. He pitched a complete game, allowing the one run on seven hits with nine strikeouts and a walk.
Tate Erickson was the lone Firestorm player to record two hits, as he finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk.
The Firestorm will close out this three-game set, with a doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday) at Vanguard, starting at 12pm. Following this series, the Firestorm will return home on February 13th and 14th for a three-game set against The Master's College Mustangs. Game one is set for Friday at 2pm at the Firestorm Baseball Field.
