Slide Ends With Walk-off And Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Phoenix, AZ- Arizona Christian baseball used a walk-off win on Saturday to end a slide and earn a split with San Diego Christian.  Game one went to the Hawks 9-4 before the Firestorm won the day cap 2-1. Senior Jake Wakamatsu was 4-8 with two doubles and a triple on the day.

The Hawks (21-17, 13-14 GSAC) plated a run in the first and five in the second to start the first game with a 6-0 advantage.  They would later tack on three in the eighth.

Junior Jake Howard walked to begin the fourth.  After singles from Junior Jose Pereyda and Wakamatsu, Howard came home on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Senior Tatum Hendrix to eliminate the zero in the score column.

ACU collected an unearned run in the sixth.  In the eighth, Wakamatsu tripled.  Pinch hitter Landon Teramoto singled Wakamatsu home and eventually came around to score on a fielder's choice by Senior Christopher Burks.

Senior Joshua Garcia (1-1) pitched the first five innings taking the loss.  Senior Cooper Johnson pitched two innings as did Sophomore Anthony Pins.

Game two saw Junior Hector Ortiz single in the first.  Senior Tate Erickson doubled down the right field line to score Ortiz and give ACU a 1-0 cushion.

Hendrix did everything in his power to make the one run stand up.  But after dodging trouble throughout, a couple of errors plated an unearned run against Hendrix in the fifth.  However, Hendrix (3-5) stayed in and completed what he started thanks to seven strikeouts to remain in line for a potential win.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Firestorm (10-24, 7-20 GSAC) did indeed make a winner out of Hendrix.  Pereyda began the half inning with a double to left.  Two pitches later, Wakamatsu doubled down the right field line to plate Pereyda with the winning run.

The win ended a 13 game slide for the Firestorm.

Seniors Wakamatsu (pictured with his mom), Hendrix, Garcia, Erickson, Tyler Mills, AJ Arroyo, Burks, Jack Sherman, and Johnson were all honored with Senior Day in between games.

Next weekend, Arizona Christian will head to Hope International to finish up the GSAC portion of their schedule.  The Firestorm and Royals will begin play at Valencia High School (Placentia, CA) on Friday evening at 6:00 pm.
