Box Score Phoenix, AZ- Junior Dean Jackson sparkled in his final game of the season by throwing eight innings of shutout baseball as Arizona Christian beat Bethesda 8-0 to open their final series of the season.
Jackson (4-5) was far from perfect as he allowed base runners in six of the eight innings he pitched allowing five hits and two walks. However, the ACU ace used his defense to perfection as he induced four double plays and saw two would be base stealers thrown out (including one as part of a double play) to let the Flames (28-23) get just two batters to second base.
He was physically involved in one of the double plays as a hot shot to first was fired to down second and returned to Jackson covering at first base for the 3-6-1 double play to end the fifth. A strike them out-throw them out double play ended the sixth.
With what possibly could have been the final pitch of his four years wearing an ACU uniform he accounted for a swinging strikeout- one of five on the day for him.
Offensively, the Firestorm (13-25) scored their runs in groups of two in four straight innings.
Junior Jose Pereyda doubled home Senior Jake Wakamatsu and Sophomore Michael Dunnebecke in the second. In the third, Senior Christopher Burks doubled and Senior Tatum Hendrix doubled in Burks and then came into score on an error and passed ball. Dunnebecke and Pereyda produced back to back singles and scored on a throwing error in the fourth. Senior Tate Erickson singled, stole second, and crossed the plate following on single from Dunnebecke in the fifth. A wild pitch and error eventually scored Dunnebecke for the final tally.
Pitching the ninth, Junior Garrett Day allowed a single but left it stranded at first.
The Firestorm and Flames will return to Firestorm Field on Saturday for two to close out the series and the ACU season. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am.
