ACU Baseball Completes Shutouts Against San Diego Christian

Phoenix, AZ- Arizona Christian completed a pair of shutouts leading to a Saturday sweep over the visiting team San Diego Christian.  ACU won game one 4-0 and took game two 2-0.

Arizona Christian used the long ball in game one to score their four runs with one swing of the bat. Junior Trent Troncone blasted a grand slam in the second inning giving ACU the 4-0 lead.

Troncone led the Firestorm at the plate going 2-for-3 with a home run, double, and four RBI.  Sophomore Todd Furr went 2-for-2 in the game.

ACU outhit the Hawks in game one 6-4.

Sophomore Trevor McGee pitched a gem going all nine innings allowing four hits while striking out two and walking two in the shutout.

Game two proved to be a close battle as the game remained scoreless until the fourth inning.  Senior Kyle Robbins singled through the right side to lead off the inning.  Junior Nicholas McCormick singled later in the inning to plate Robbins giving the Firestorm the one run lead.

ACU would later add an insurance run in the sixth inning as Senior Jonathan Nunnally, Jr. homered to center giving the Firestorm the 2-0 lead.

McCormick went 1-for-2 with a RBI and one walk. Nunnally ended the game going 1-for-3 with a home run.

Junior Steven Butts started on the mound tossing 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball before having to leave the game for an injury.  Junior Yuan (Leo) Liu and Senior Colton Wheeler combined to complete the shutout pitching 2.2 innings of relief.  Butts earned the win in the game and is now 4-1 on the season.  Wheeler earned his first save on the year.

The weekend series concludes the GSAC schedule.  The Firestorm will play a week of non-conference play starting Tuesday as they host Benedictine-Mesa.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
